I am a health care professional who cares for others – yet rarely did I put my own self-care first! So – I learnt the hard way that self-care IS important.
In the past I tried to do it all and rarely asked for help. I put on a strong and happy face. I said to myself, “I have it all under control”.
I rarely (maybe never) showed how I truly felt – which was overwhelmed, stressed, tired, guilty, sad, angry and the list goes on.
To the point that I even forgot what it felt like to feel. I was numb. No sadness. But no joy either.
The Wake-Up Calls
In 2005 I experienced symptoms that remained undiagnosed for years. In 2009 Bells Palsy showed up (literally – my face got it). Then again in 2015, fatigue and pain issues showed up. With all kinds of labels and diagnosed offered. Depends on whom you ask!
It took lots of self-care to bring me out of this last one – a medical leave from my job, quitting my job, and lots of support from family and friends. Help from various practitioners, healthy eating, exercise, tai chi, meditation, mindfulness, neurolinguistic programming, hypnosis, awareness of my thoughts and beliefs, non-judgment, acceptance, nature, and I am sure much more.
To bring me to where I am today.
Where I now feel emotions again (yes!), I communicate more effectively, I listen to my needs, I ask for help, I take time for self-care, and I am more present in the lives of people around me. I am physically healthier.
I have learned so much. Including how much emotions and beliefs are also an energy – which weigh down on your physical body resulting in health issues.
I know there will continue to be ups and downs and on-going growth. This is all part of the journey.
I am grateful for what I have learnt despite the challenges. I also see how this has and will positively impact those around me, including the ways in which I now work with and help clients.
It’s time to share. It is time for connection.
