As I lay in bed the other night I had these insights that I just felt just had to be shared!
I got the giggles as I reflected on a few things that night. I was lying in bed thinking, “I want to decapitate my thoughts and my mind from me”. Yes, this is coming from a mindfulness practitioner. I am human too.
I felt my mind had been like a high-speed express train going non-stop the few days prior. One moment I was listening to someone’s conversation and the next thing I knew I was somewhere else thinking of something unrelated. I would be listening to my kids read a book out loud – they hadn’t even gotten to the second page and my mind was again thinking about who knows what!!
However as I felt the need to decapitate my thoughts and mind I realized that if I didn’t have them – I actually would not appreciate the times when I DO feel at peace or when I DO have that sense of nothingness. Interesting – besides allowing me to function in day-to-day life, my thoughts do have another function! I realized that I no longer need to decapitate my thoughts from myself. Actually, life may get rather boring for me without my thoughts!
I grinned to myself and realized that if there was no darkness, many of us would not appreciate the light. In the literal sense, would you appreciate a beautiful sunrise, if the sun was always up twenty fours hours a day. How grateful are you for your breath? It is always there for us so we take it for granted. Unless of course you have experienced being deprived of oxygen or a breath.
Then an image of the yin-yang symbol came to me and I realized how it reflects wholeness. There is a reason that it is a circle, complete as it is. That darkness and light creates a whole.
I realized with more depth that we as human beings are whole just as we are – with our darkness and light.
So I am recognizing (again) that rather than fighting what I think is “bad”, that this is a part of me and is what makes me whole.
What is the darkness that you are resisting?
By embracing your darkness, how can you discover your sense of wholeness?
