My intention is to share, inspire, educate and help others understand trauma. And to help others move through trauma so they can live a more meaningful life.
Let me begin by saying trauma doesn’t have to mean the Big “T” trauma e.g. war, rape etc.
Did you know that even an administrative staff member who is reading/typing up reports, (for instance, for first responders or medical doctors) can also experience vicarious trauma – simply by reading about the painful experiences of others.
As an Occupational Therapist who worked in the health care system – I saw compassion fatigue all around me amongst colleagues, including in myself (hindsight is 20/20, isn’t it).
And did you know that those with a personal trauma history are at a higher risk for vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. Who is helping those people? Who is noticing those subtle yet obvious signs of compassion fatigue?
I’ve seen how trauma can affect not only mental health but the body and the spirit. And the body in turn affects the mind, emotions. and spirit. It’s all connected.
It affects how fragmented we feel as individuals and how disconnected we feel from others.
Yet I have seen how many, many, many different ways of treatment, therapy, and healing – can help individuals move through their past trauma, come to live in the present and look forward to the future.
Even the simplest act of listening to another with non-judgement and compassion –
begins the healing process.
I’m excited to share what I’m learning about how trauma affects our physiology, our hormones , brain, nervous system, digestion, and more. Yet it is often thought trauma is just a mental health issue.
It is just the beginning – of bringing awareness to the far reaching effects of trauma. To create positive change, right?
